Tigard-Tualatin School District has adopted a reading curriculum called Journeys. It is a comprehensive, phonics-based program that uses authentic literature and includes activities for the development of oral language, grammar, spelling, reading fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. As part of this reading adoption the district has asked all elementary schools to use a program called “Walk to Read”. During Walk to Read students will be skill grouped across the grade level. They may go to a different fifth grade teacher for this portion of the literacy block and then return to their homeroom for the remainder of the day. Each reading teacher will design her reading class to best meet the needs of her group of students.
